Walter Relly colony

Among the mysteries of archeology, you can find a whole layer of events associated with certain missing values, buildings or expeditions. And in this row, it is often possible to find the disappeared cities and settlements, among which there is not one missing colony. About one of the Walter Relly colony and we'll go further.

The first English colony in North America was founded by Walter Relly, who named her Virginia for the honor of Queen Elizabeth the First

The first English colony in North America was founded by Walter Relly, who named her Virginia for the honor of Queen Elizabeth the First. The colonization of America and the increasing influence of England on the American continent was the great dream of this poor nobleman. Implement it, he met with the support of the monarch, as he was one of the favorites of the English queen. For her reign, he distinguished himself in pirate attacks on the Spanish fleet, for which in 1585 he was awarded the title of knight. In addition, Walter Religion received a privateer patent, allowing legally to rob foreign ships.

Of course, both the Queen and Walter Relly understood that a colony in North America would provide an opportunity to quickly reach the riches of this continent. And the naval base is needed in order to attack the Spanish colonies in America. The Queen issued to her favorite a ten-year patent for the organization and establishment of settlements in North America. In addition, an intelligence expedition was organized from two ships under the command of Philip Armagedes and Arthur Warlow. The expedition explored the coast of present-day North Carolina and returned to England with samples of local flora and fauna, as well as two indigenous Croats of the Mantoe and Wanchez tribes. Arthur Warlow has very colorfully described for Walter Reese all the positive aspects of a new place for the organization of the colony, ranging from a lot of game in the forests and ending with an extraordinary yield of local soil.

And in 1584 Walter Relly organizes an expedition and establishes the first English colony in North America - on the island of Roanoke. And then riddles begin. The first expedition led by Ralph Lane left the island and returned to England. The other one disappeared without a trace. Among its participants were several families, in the colony of Walter Relly even the first child of English descent was born. But the head of the colony John White could not make friends with the local population, so sailed to England for reinforcements. And at the same time, England got involved in another military campaign against Spain. In this regard, reinforcements led by Relly and White returned only three years later, in August 1590, on the ship "Good Hope". But there was no longer a colony of Walter Relly. On one of the trees, only the word "Cro" was cut, which was considered the beginning of the word "Croatoan". Interestingly, in those days, the people in distress or the threatened threat left the symbolic sign of the disaster as a Maltese cross. But John White did not find anything like that. He had the hope that the settlers swam to the neighboring island of Kroatoan with the help of the Manteio Indian, who was from there. But no one was found on the island either. The colonists disappeared without a trace...

Archaeological research on the island of Kroato has been given very little. In 1998, a ring of one of the colonists from Roanoke was found there. But whether he was lost by the colonist or by someone who took away the ring from him, remains unknown. According to another version, settlers from Roanoke joined the Indians of the Croathoan tribe. The argument of this assumption is that among the members of this tribe today you can meet white tall people with blue eyes.

But which of the versions is correct, where Walter's colony vanished and now remains a mystery. Whatever it was, there are things in this world that the river of time forever hides from our eyes.
