Lake Titicaca is located high in the Andes on the border of two countries - Peru and Bolivia

Titicaca is the most high-altitude lake of the globe, on which already for over 100 years there is a regular shipping company. The area of the lake is 8,300 sq. km.

Despite the fact that Lake Titicaca is located at an altitude of 3812 m above sea level, the water in its central part has a constant temperature of +11 degrees and, therefore, never freezes.

A lot of interesting things are waiting for the traveler on the shores of Lake Titicaca, but most of all they attract the ruins of a mysterious city near the lake. "The capital of the Andes" was called its scientists, "The City of the Dead" ("Tiahuanaco") called its Indians. True, the remains of some structures and giant fragments of rocks weighing up to 160 tons remained from the city.

Behind legends on the bottom of Titicaca are hidden huge, countless treasures of the Inca empire. In 1955, U. Mardorf, a diver, descended to the bottom of Titicaca in search of these riches. He did not find there a golden treasure, but at a depth of about 10 m discovered the ruins of another mysterious city. Later, in 1969, the famous traveler Jacques-Yves Cousteau explored Titicaca. He also did not discover the treasure, but at the same time found that the depth of the lake reaches 320 m.

As for the "Capital of the Andes," it should be thought that at first it was based on the shore of that part of Lake Titicaca, which, due to the rise in the level of the lake, was soon flooded. Then moved to a new location, where the remains of the Tiguanacu are now located. But from those times the level of Titicaca changed again, this time it receded from the city by 30 km.

The modern lake of Titicaca is only a small part of the ancient lake. But was Titicaca a lake? There are many evidences that confirm the connection that existed between the lake and the Pacific Ocean.

The water in Titicaca, though fresh, but slightly salted, contains salt that is characteristic of the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Among the fauna of Lake Titicaca there are several representatives of oceanic inhabitants, for example, some species of sharks. So, obviously open ancient cities were at different times ports in the sea bay, which was then Lake Titicaca.

Many complex issues should be solved by scientists, in order to finally uncover the secrets of Lake Titicaca and the mysterious "City of the Dead" and its underwater predecessor.
