Scientists have discovered that to blame any particular, incredibly small, single-celled algae. It is they who give the water a different color, and their waste products are dangerous for living organisms.

It is assumed that the algae, especially phytoplankton, can form dense, visible stripes on the surface of the water. Some species of phytoplankton, such as dinoflagellates contain photosynthetic pigments. Their color ranges from green to brown and red.

When the concentration of algae is high, the water appears discolored or dark. Moreover, the color varies from purple to nearly pink. But it is not always a large concentration of algae leads to a color change, and not always the water turns red.

Sometimes the "red death" associated with the production of natural toxins that lead to the depletion of oxygen or other dangerous effects. In general, they are described as harmful algal blooms.

As you can see, "red death" in no hurry to reveal their secrets. Namely, where are the coastal waters of these dangerous algae? For what conditions is their disastrous proliferation? Why and where they suddenly disappear, like there? How to explain that the "red death" does not come every year, and not even in the same period?
