Sources of fresh water

Once the fishermen of the Lebanese city of Tripoli discovered in the Mediterranean Sea, sources of fresh water, 500 m from the shore, and so cold that the fish that accidentally gets here immediately die. Where do these sources of fresh and cold water come from, no one knew. This unusual phenomenon was called the "Lebanese miracle".

Once the fishermen of the Lebanese city of Tripoli discovered in the Mediterranean Sea, sources of fresh water, 500 m from the shore...

It is now established that the water of these fresh sources is also of Lebanese origin. It turns out that when in the mountains of Lebanon snow melts, only 1/4 of the melt water irrigates the local valleys. The overwhelming majority falls into the underground rivers, which precisely and carry it to the seabed and create powerful cold springs of fresh water.

Numerous underwater sources of fresh water are also known in other parts of the Mediterranean, particularly in the south of France, near the city of Cannes, where fresh water hits from a depth of 162 m, near the Italian city of Sanremo - from 190 m, and in the Adriatic Sea, near the shores of the former Yugoslavia , similar sources of fresh water are found even at 700-meter depth!

Such sources of fresh water are found in some other seas and oceans of the globe. In particular, they are of great importance where they represent a single source of drinking water. For example, the population of the island of Moherrek from the Bahraini Islands has long been receiving drinking water... from the bottom of the Persian Gulf. Swimmers take bags from sheep's clothing, dive to the bottom and fill them there.

In Australia, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, the sources of fresh water are so powerful that the inhabitants lower long bamboo sticks to the bottom, and fresh water rises upwards due to the difference in pressure. It is said that during the First World War even military ships filled their boilers in this way. At times, when the powerful sources of fresh water are not very deep, the salt water, which is poor in salt, rising upwards, forms into the dense sea peculiar funnels, which expand upward.

One such location is located to the east of the North American peninsula of Florida. Imagine a large "bowl" of a source of fresh water with a diameter of 30 m, which is located among immense saline waters Atlantic Ocean. This source of fresh water forms a powerful fountain, located at the bottom of the ocean, at a depth of 40 m. It is interesting that this freshwater oasis is indicated on all sea charts. Here ships often come to replenish fresh water supplies.
