It is known how plants breathe oxygen - absorb it, releasing carbon dioxide. Even the biochemical reactions occurring in the body during respiration are the same in plants and animals. But what is breathing and why do we need oxygen? It is needed to oxidize the organic substances that we get with food. When oxidizing food, the energy contained in organic molecules is released. That is, breathing is necessary for obtaining energy. Of course, plants do not have a mouth or lungs, they do not breathe like people. But the principle is the same - plants breathe, extracting oxygen to get energy.

In ancient times, there was no oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere, but there was much more carbon dioxide. Plants have also developed the ability to absorb carbon dioxide and, by extracting energy from the sun's rays of light, form the necessary substances from it. And in the atmosphere, they allocated oxygen, which gave life to the whole "breathing world." Well, how does all this happen on experience?

The scientists had an interesting experience. They grew cabbage and beets first in the air. Then put half of the plants in a chamber in which oxygen was only 2.5%. The other half of the lot, the control plants, remained in the air at 21% oxygen. Both those and other plants were illuminated around the clock. One might think that plants without oxygen will perish, but this is not true. Six days later they weighed twice as much as the control ones!

But how is it? Do plants breathe without oxygen?.. Simply plants are able to very effectively use the energy of sunlight. And when the light is replaced by darkness, plants switch from one source of energy to another. In the light they synthesize organic substances using the energy of light, and in the dark they breathe, they extract energy by oxidizing substances formed in the light. This breath is called dark. Such a switch allows the plant to save internal reserves, since it is accessible to sunlight - an external source of energy.

However, plants also breathe in the light. But it only brings them harm. Absorbing oxygen, they emit carbon dioxide - their main food. Therefore, they begin to grow more slowly. True, there are plants without light breathing. This is corn and sugar cane. It is known how quickly and powerfully they expand.

There are only hypotheses about the cause of the appearance of light breathing. Scientists suggest that light breathing came from a symbiosis of primitive photosynthetic organisms with non-photosynthesizing, breathing. Symbiosis is a mutual effect useful to both sides. Small photosynthesis, living in water, absorbed carbon dioxide from the environment and isolated oxygen. If there were no breathing organisms in the environment, which, on the contrary, absorbed oxygen and released carbon dioxide, soon the conditions of life would become unbearable for photosynthetic ones. Therefore, only those survived, which, in turn, were something useful for nephotoxicity. One way to be useful was to isolate any substances that non-photosynthetic drugs could consume. Such a substance could be glycolic acid, one of the substances formed during photosynthesis. It is also distinguished by some modern algae. Thus, photosynthetics were "fed" non-photosynthetic drugs with glycolic acid, so that they absorbed oxygen from the environment, oxidizing glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is that substance which, after several biochemical transformations, is oxidized in plants with the formation of carbon dioxide with light breathing. Hence, the more oxygen in the medium, the more glycolic acid is formed, the more intense light breathing and the more carbon dioxide absorbed during photosynthesis will be released again into the medium.

Probably, in the same way, plants developed and the ability to regulate light breathing in accordance with the concentration of carbon dioxide. Breathable organisms not only absorbed from the environment oxygen, undesirable for photosynthetic, but also enriched it with the carbon dioxide necessary for them.
